2、butitisgenerallyassumedthatwecannotbyconsciousactiondoanythingaboutit.Ourcivilizationisdecadentandourlanguagesotheargumentrunsmustinevitablyshareinthegeneralcollapse.Itfollowsthatanystruggleagainsttheabuseoflanguageisasentimentalarchaism,likepreferringcandlestoelectriclightorhansomcabstoaero

3、planes.Underneaththisliesthehalfconsciousbeliefthatlanguageisanaturalgrowthandnotaninstrumentwhichweshapeforourownpurposes.GeorgeOrwell,"PoliticsandtheEnglishLanguage,"1946IntroductionIf,asOrwellsuggestsinthepassageabove,languageisaninstrumentwhichweshapeforourownpurposes,itmayserveuswelltoexam

4、inethemajorcontextsinwhichweemploythelanguageofviolenceandconflict.Iwanttodividemyinvestigationintothreeseparateareas.Heretheyareinanutshell:(1)Whatisthelanguageofviolenceinthefieldofcombat?(2)Whatisthelanguageofviolenceinthepublicsphere?(3)Howdoesthelanguageofviolenceemergeinourordinarylives,es

5、peciallyinsports?Idonotapproachthistopicfromanexpertsstanceorevenasonewhohasamassedadealofexperientialbackgroundintheseareas.Ihaveneverbeenasoldierorapeaceofficer,thoughmyfatherwasacareermilitaryman(engineers).Iapproachthisareaasaphilosopher,bringingtotheissueof“thelanguageofviolence”awillingnes
