3、‘‘weakness’’surfacesintheiranalysis.Themoststraightforwardwayofdealingwiththissituationistotreatthejointedrockmassasanassemblageofpiecesofintactrockmaterialinmutualinteractionthroughtheseparatingjointinterfaces.Manydesign-orientedmethodsrelatingtothiskindofapproachhavebeendevelo
4、pedinthepastdecades,amongthem,thewell-known‘‘blocktheory,’’whichattemptstoidentifypoten-tiallyunstablelumpsofrockfromgeometricalandkinematicalconsiderations(GoodmanandShi1985;Warburton1987;Goodman1995).Oneshouldalsoquotethewidelyuseddistinctelementmethod,originatingfromtheworkso
5、fCundallandcoauthors(CundallandStrack1979;Cundall1988),whichmakesuseofanexplicitfinite-differencenumericalschemeforcomputingthedisplacementsoftheblocksconsideredasrigidordeformablebodies.Inthiscontext,attentionisprimarilyfocusedontheformulationofrealisticmodelsfordescribingthejoi
6、ntbehavior.Sincethepreviouslymentioneddirectapproachisbecominghighlycomplex,andthennumericallyuntractable,assoonasaverylargenumberofblocksisinvolved,itseemsadvisabletolookforalternativemethodssuchasthosederivedfromtheconceptofhomogenization.Actually,suchaconceptisalreadypartiall
