2、atigueTestingMachingThispaperdiscussesthedevelopmentofamultiaxialfatiguetestigmachine.ThedeflectioncontrolledeccentricdisktypetestingmachineproducesmodeI,modeII,orcombinationofboth,ofcracksurfacedisplacementsonroundorflatspecimens.Theseloadingsarenecess
3、aryforresearchoncomplexmultiaxialstresseswhicharecommoninengineeringpractice,suchascrankshafts.Thismachineachievedtheobjectivewithverysimplemechanisms(vectorsumoftwocrankthrowsofeccentricdisksyieldbendingmoments;vectordifferences,twistingmoments),butwit
4、hmorecomputationinsettingthedesiredparameters.Bendingdataandtorsiondataproducedbythemachinewereingoodagreementwiththedatabyaconventionalfatiguetestingmachine.Multiaxialdataproducedbythemachinewerealsoingoodagreementwiththepredictionbyawellprovedmultiaxi

6、oadings.Fatiguecrackinitiationandpropagationundermultiaxialloadingsshowdifferentbehaviorfromthoseofuniaxialloading.Fatiguelifepredictionofstructuresormachinepartsundermultiaxialloadingsisessentialtotheirreliabledesignandfailureprevention.Suchpredictionw
7、asoftenbasedonsimplelaboratorydatageneratedundercyclicuniaxialloading.ResearchbyBrownandMiller(l973),Krempl(1974),Lee(1980)andGarud(1981)indicatedthatuniaxialdataalonecannotbeapplieddirectlytothepracticalsituationsofcomplexmultiaxialfatigue,i.e.,movingp
8、rincipalaxesandnonproportionalloading.Manyfatiguetheoriesorcriteriahavebeenproposedbutnonewasgenerallyaccepted(Garud,1981;Lee,1985).Verylittleexperimentalworkhasbeendoneinthisfieldowingtothelackofpropermultiaxialfatiguetestingmac
