5、ationofU.S.society.TheinstitutionofslaveryericanRevolutionthatcostatleast600,000lives.Butracismoutlivedslaveryandflourishedforthenext100yearsintheformofJimCroajorityofstates,fromNorthDakotatoTexastoCalifornia,madeitacrimeforBlackstointerminglehospitalstocemeteries,lunchco
6、unterstophonebooths,militaryservicetomarriage.JimCroassivecivilrightsstrugglestretchingovermorethantthe1955Montgomerybusboycotttothefighttoenforcecourt-orderedschooldesegregationinthe1970s.Butdefactosegregationcontinued,NorthandSouth,andBlackanatedfromthepoliticalestablis
7、hment,injectingracismboththeDemocraticandRepublicanPartiesscrambledtoappeartoughoncrime,embracingtheso-calledduringthatperiodajorityofthemorethan2million,AfricanAmericansmakeupjust12percentoftheU.S.populationandonly13percentofdrugusers,yetaccountfor35percentofdrugarrestsa
8、nd53percentofdrugconvictions.Blacksarealso43percentofthoseondeathroatedthat30percentof12year-oldBlackboyseinjailintheirlifetimes--farmorethananystateshavelaerinmatestherighttovote,anestimated13percentofallBlackmen--includingoneineverythreeinAlabamaandFlorida--havebeendise
