3、dtheorieslimitsignificantlytheaccuracyofsettlementestimation.ThispaperpresentsanobservationalmethodtopredictthesettlementperformanceofembankmentswithstageconstructiononsoftgroundbasedonAsaokamethod.Thecasestudiesshowtheaccordanceofthepredictingresultswiththefieldmeasureddata.Itisa

4、lsogivenfromthecasestudythatthevalueofEu/Curatiorangesfrom50to100forJiangsuMarineclayanditsactualcoefficientofconsolidationisalmostoneorderofmagnitudelargerthanthelaboratorydata.Keywords:settlement,embankment,observationalmethod,stageconstruction1.IntroductionSettlementandstabilit

5、yaretwoprimaryconsiderationssystematicallyrelatedtothedesignofanembankmentonsoftground.Thetoolsavailableforthestabilityevaluationseemtobesatisfactory.Thekeyelementoflongtermbehavioroftheembankmentroutinelysubjectedtodesignanalysisisthesettlement.Inotherwords,thesettlementanalysisi

6、sthemostappropriateapproachtotheembankmentanalysis.Thesettlementsofembankmentsonsoftclaysresultfromtheconsolidationandthelateralflowundertheembankments.Manyresearcheshavebeenmadeonperformanceofembankmentsonsoftground.Althoughmanyexperienceshaveshownthepracticalvalueofthetheoryfore

7、stimatingsettlementsandsettlementsrates,theyalsoillustratedsomeoftheproblemsinvolvedinmakingaccuratepredictionofthesettlement.Duncan(1993)andOlson(1998)analyzedtheuncertaintiescausingtheshortcomingsinthecurrentstateoftheartforsettlementpredictionrespectively.Theseuncertaintiessome
