2、ina’sjoiningthemarket-basedglobaleconomy,itsfast-movingworldfinancialmarketsappealtomanyforeigncompanies.ThisfinancialgrowthhasgivenrisetoapressingdemandforlargenumbersofcompetentusersofEnglishinawiderangeofprofessionsandbusinesses.Suchrecentpolitical,econom

3、ic,andsocialfactorswillhaveagreatimpactonEnglishlanguageteachingandlearninginChina.Hence,howtoimprovelearners’abilityoflearningEnglishinordertomeetnewdemandsseemsimperative.Inthepast25years,thefieldofsecondlanguageacquisitionhasseenthereemergenceofinterestin

4、oneareaoflanguagestudy,i.e.vocabulary,andtheappearanceofanewlyrecognizedaspectlearningstrategies.Vocabularyisafundamentallyimportantaspectoflanguagelearning.Learningalanguageisjustlikeconstructingabuilding,inwhichvocabulary,thebuildingmaterials,isessential.V

5、ocabularyknowledgeenableslanguageuse,languageuseenablestheincreaseofvocabularyknowledge,andknowledgeoftheworldenablestheincreaseofvocabularyknowledgeandlanguageuseandsoon.Rubin&Thompsononcesaid,“Onecan’tspeak,understand,readorwriteaforeignlanguagewithoutknow

6、ingalotofwords.”Therefore,vocabularyisattheheartofmasteringaforeignlanguage.InChina,theimportanceofvocabularyinsecondlanguageacquisitionhasbeengreatlyrecognized.However,teachersputgreatemphasisonexplaininggrammaranddevelopingstudents’readingskill,leavingvoca

7、bularytostudentsthemselves.Tostudents,theybelieve,learningawordmeansknowingitspronunciation,spelling,andmeanings,whichcanbememorizeabsolutelybythemselvesiftheywantto.However,studentscannotachieveahighlevelafterseveralyearsofendeavor,andvocabularyisthemostcha
