3、noveltoitsmaturityandhersatiricalfictionsmarkedthetransitionfromthe18th-centuryneoclassicismtothe19th-centuryromanticismintheEnglishliterature.JaneAustenwasbornatSteventonandtheseventhchildofacountryclergymanfamily.Shewaseducatedathomeandpassedallherlifeindoingsmalldomesticdutiesinthecountrysi
4、de.Shewrotesixcompletefamousnovels,includingSenseandSensibility(1811),PrideandPrejudice(1813),MansfieldPark(1814),Emma(1816),NorthangerAbbey(1818),andPersuasion(1818).Shelivedandworkedattheturnofthecentury,whichwitnessedagreatchangeoftheEnglishsociety.SincetheIndustrialRevolutioninthesecondhal
5、fofthe18thcentury,theEnglishsocialstructureunderwentrapidchanges.Theindustrialcapitalistsbegantocontrolnotonlytheeconomicbutalsothepoliticalpowerandthusthestrugglebetweentheworkersandcapitalistsalsobecamemoreandmoresharp.Consequently,peoplestartedtodoubtandevenlosehopetotheenlighteningthoughts
6、thatwaspopularinthefirsthalfofthe18thcentury.Literature,asa“barometer”ofthesociallife,alsoexperiencedgreatchange.Oneofthemostremarkablechangeswasintheliterarytaste.Thatistosay,peoplestartedtodislikeSwift’sbrutality,Defoe’sfrankrealism,andevenFielding’smasculinesatire.Sotheworkswiththerationalt
7、onebegantogivewaytotheworksfullofsentiments.Undersuchasocialandliteraryenvironment,JaneAustenexertedhertransitionalroleinEnglishliterature.Wecanseeitfromtwoaspects.Firstly,intheme,mostofJaneAusten’snovelsreflecttheprocessofthechangeofth
