1、JaneAusten'sPrideandPrejudicehadalongandvariedlifebeforeitfinallysawpublicationonJanuary28,1813.Austenbeganthebook,originallytitledFirstImpressions,in1796.HerfathersubmittedittoaLondonpublisherthefollowingyear,butthemanuscriptwasrejected.Austencontinuedtoworkonthebook,and

2、scholarsreportthatthestoryremainedafavoritewiththeclosecircleoffriends,relations,andacquaintancesshetookintoherconfidence.SheprobablycontinuedworkingonFirstImpressionsafterherfamilyrelocatedtoBathin1801anddidnotstoprevisingandrewritinguntilafterthedeathsofbothherfatherand

3、aclosefriendin1805.AfterthispointAustenseemstohavegivenupwritingforalmostfiveyears.Shehadresumedworkonthebookby1811,scholarsreport,andthefinalproductappearedanonymouslyinLondonbookstallsearlyin1813.ThecriticalhistoryofPrideandPrejudicewasjustasvariedastheevolutionofthenov

4、elitself.Atthetimethenovelwaspublishedintheearlynineteenthcentury,mostrespectedcriticalopinionwasstronglybiasedagainstnovelsandnovelists.AlthoughonlythreecontemporaryreviewsofPrideandPrejudiceareknowntoexist,theyareallremarkablycomplimentary.AnonymousarticlesintheBritishC

5、riticandtheCriticalReviewpraisedtheauthor'scharacterizationandherportrayalofdomesticlife.AdditionalearlycommentaryexistsinthediariesandlettersofsuchprominentcontemporaryreadersasMaryRussellMitfordandHenryCrabbRobinson,bothofwhomadmiredthework'scharacters,realism,andfreedo

6、mfromthetrappingsofGothicfiction.Afterthisperiod,however,criticismofPrideandPrejudice,andofAusten'sworksasawhole,largelydisappeared.WiththeexceptionoftwoposthumousappreciationsofAusten'sworkasawholebySirWalterScottandArchbishopRichardWhateley,verylittleAustencriticismappe
