3、aractersofanation,includingtheirhistoryandculturalbackground,andcontainingtheirviewtolife,livinghabitandmodeofthinking,sopeopleusuallycalllanguage“thecarrierofculture”.Culturesofeverynationhavetheircommoncharactersandindividualities;thesecommoncharacterscomefromtheobjectivenaturewhichissharedby
4、thewholeworld.Becauseofthedifferenceofenvironmentwhichincludestheecologicalenvironment,materialcivilizationenvironment,socialcivilizationenvironment,religiouscivilizationenvironment,everynationformedtheirownspeciallanguages.Owingtothedifferencesofgeographicalenvironmentsandcustoms,thesewordsand
5、phrases,whosedenotationsaresimilarinthetwolanguages,havedifferentculturalbackgroundsinEnglishandChineselanguages,consequentlytheirculturalconnotationswillbedifferentfromeachother.Accordingly,nowadays,cross-culturalcommunicationhasarousedmoreandmoreattention.Asuccessfulinter-culturalcommunicatio
6、nnotonlyrequiresexcellentforeignlanguagecompetence,butalsorequirespeopletobefamiliarwiththedifferencesbetweenoramongcultures,andusethatknowledgeflexiblyinproperwaysincommunication.Forthisreason,andnoother,thispaperpurposelyanalyzesthedifferentcultualconnotationsofanimalandcolorwordsandphrasesbe
