3、tofhismajorworksweresetintheimaginaryYoknapaowphaCountyanditsmaintownofJeffersoncalled“themythicalkingdom”(Geismar.47),whichbearmarkedsimilaritiestoFaulkner’snativeOxford.Healsodepictedtheparticularpsychologicalstressesassociatedwiththedeclineofthesouthfromitsr
4、omanticallygloriouspast.Aboveall,“Faulknerrepresentsthemoralconfusionandsocialdecaythatfollowedinimagesofhauntingpowerandviolence”.Hereceivedthe1950NobelPrizeforLiterature,WilliamFaulkner’sreputationandinfluencehadspreadtoeverypartoftheworld.Faulknerwasnotedoft
5、heSoutherners’associationwiththeSouthtradition,notonlyphysical,butspiritualaswell；sohetookpainstopictureagroupofSouthernerswhoweredesperatelysubmittedtotheoldwayoflife.Butasanartistofthetwentiethcentury,heobservedthegradualchangesoftheSouth:theoldveteransweredy
6、ingoff,andtheoldloyaltieswereadjustedtoconformtonewconditions.ThelossoftheSouthtraditionandtheappearanceoftheNorthindustrializationarousednotonlythedevastationoftheSouthernplantationsystem,butalsothemacabredisillusionmenttotheSoutherndescendants,astheSouthknewt
