1、AComparativeStudyofEnglishandChineseIdiom Idiomsaretheimportantpartofalanguage.Asalanguageform,idiomshasitsowncharacteristicandpatternsandareusedinhighfrequencywhetherinwrittenlanguageororallanguagebecauseidiomscanconveyahostoflanguageandculturalinformationwhenpeoplechattoeacho

2、ther. Whatdoidiomsmean?Differentexpertshavedifferentopinionsanddefinitionstoidioms.Somepeopleconsideridiomsasquintessenceofalanguage.Othersregardthemastreasuryofalanguage.Thesestatementsincertaindegreereflecttheidioms'characteristics,butcan'tberegardedasidioms'definition. Itisd

3、ifficulttogiveacleardefinitiontoidioms.First,peopleareoftenconfusedwiththeirscope,contentandform.Second,expertshavedifferentopinionsabouthowtodivideidiomsfromnarrowsenseandgeneralsense.Whatkindoflanguageexpressionreallybelongstoidioms.Allofthesecausesbringdifficultytodefineaidi

4、om.Maybeowingtothosecauses,theword“idiom”evenhasn'tbeencollectedinsuchauthoritivereferencebooksasModernChineseDictionaryandCihai(辞海).However,someEnglishDictionariesgive“idiom”avarityofdefinitions.Forexample,LongmanActiveEnglish-ChineseDictionary(1990)definesanidiomas“aphrasewhi

5、chmeanssomethingdifferentfromthemeaningsoftheseparatewords”.TheconciseOxfordDictionary(2000)givessuchadefinitionas“agroupofwordsestablishedbyusageandhavingameaningnotdeduciblefromthoseoftheindividualwords”.LongmanDictionaryofcontemporaryEnglish(1998)givesthedefinitive“aphrasewh

6、ichmeanssomethingdifferentfromthemmeaningsoftheseparatewordsfromwhichitisformed”.AndWebster'sNewWorldDictionaryoftheAmericanlanguage(2ndcollegeedition,1972)givesthisdefinition“anacceptedphrase,construction,orexpressioncontrarytothepatternsofthelanguagehavingameaningdifferentfro

7、mthelanguageorhavingadifferentfromtheliteral”. Accordingtoalltheabovementioned“idiom”isaphraseoragroupofwordsapprovedbypeopleandhasuniqueform.Itsmeaningisdifferentfromtheliteral.Ingeneralsense,thescopeofEnglishandChineseidiomsincludes,setphrasecommonsayings,proverbs,idiomaticph
