3、eldoflinguistics.Theconceptof“vagueness”gavethelinguistsadifferentideatostudylanguageandsomecontributionsweremadeinthefieldsofsemantics,psychologyandsoon.ThebeginningofstudyingvaguelanguageinChinaisin1980swiththepublicationofWuTieping’sADiscussionofVagueLanguage.Mostofthestudiesonvaguelanguage

4、inrecentyearsarelimitedinthestructureandmeaningofvagueexpressionsandneglecttheuseofvaguelanguage.Theuseofvaguelanguageisquitecommoninourdailylifeandisimportanttomakethecommunicationpoliteandappropriate.Hedgesasanimportantpartinthescopeofvaguelanguage,itsuseshouldreceivetheattentionofthestudies

5、.Thereforethispaperconcentratesonintroducingthedifferenttypesandformsofhedgesanddiscussingtheirpragmaticfunctions.2.AClassificationofHedgesTheterm“LinguisticHedge”wasfirstlyputforwardbyL.A.Zadeh(1972).AccordingtoG.Lakoff(1972),hedgemeansthewordswhichmakethethingsvague.Yule,G.defines“hedge”as“c

6、autiousnotesexpressedabouthowanutteranceistobetakenwhengivinginformation”(Yule,2000:130).Thevaguenessofhedgedependsonthespecificcontextinwhichitisembedded.Thereareseveraldifferentclassificationsofhedges.Accordingtowhetherthehedgecouldchangethetruth-conditionofanutteranceorchangethemeaningofthe

7、utterance,hedgescouldbedividedintotwomajortypes:approximatorsandshields(He:1988,176-181).2.1ApproximatorsApproximatorsareusedtochangethemeaningofanutteranceortomodifytheoriginalmeaningoftheutteranceinacertaindegree.Itcouldavoidthearbitr
