4、inrecentyearsarelimitedinthestructureandmeaningofvagueexpressionsandneglecttheuseofvaguelanguage.Theuseofvaguelanguageisquitecommoninourdailylifeandisimportanttomakethecommunicationpoliteandappropriate.Hedgesasanimportantpartinthescopeofvaguelanguage,itsuseshouldreceivetheattentionofthestudies
5、.Thereforethispaperconcentratesonintroducingthedifferenttypesandformsofhedgesanddiscussingtheirpragmaticfunctions.2.AClassificationofHedgesTheterm“LinguisticHedge”wasfirstlyputforwardbyL.A.Zadeh(1972).AccordingtoG.Lakoff(1972),hedgemeansthewordswhichmakethethingsvague.Yule,G.defines“hedge”as“c
6、autiousnotesexpressedabouthowanutteranceistobetakenwhengivinginformation”(Yule,2000:130).Thevaguenessofhedgedependsonthespecificcontextinwhichitisembedded.Thereareseveraldifferentclassificationsofhedges.Accordingtowhetherthehedgecouldchangethetruth-conditionofanutteranceorchangethemeaningofthe
