3、sesintheindustrialapplicationsofoperationsresearchhasbeentheuseoftheLerchs—Grossmanalgorithm,anditssub-sequentimprovements,intheoptimisationofthedesignofopenpitmines.Thistechniquehasbeensuccessfullyimplementedinanumberofwidelyusedsoftwaresystems.Mostopenpitdesignsaredevelop
4、edinanopti-misationframeworktraceablebacktothemethodlaunchedbyLerchsandGrossman(1965),althoughmorerecentlyanumberofauthors,includingBarbaroandRamani(1986),AkaikeandDagdelen(1999)andCaccettaandHill(2003),havereportedintegerprogrammingmodelsforthistask.Theundergroundminedesig
5、nproblemisconceptuallymoredifficultandlessconstrainedthantheopenpitproblem.Howeverrecentresearchdemon-stratessomeprogressinthetopic.Thischapterreviewssomeofthisprogresswithemphasisontheoptimisationofthedesignofundergroundmines.Undergroundminingistheplannedextractionandtrans
6、portationofamineralresourcefromitsundergroundlocationtoamillorprocessingplantonthesurface.Thisdeceptivelysimplestatementdisguisesthecomplexsetofdevelop-mentandoperationalphasesneededtoachievethistransformationbutitisagoodstartingpointforanoperationalresearchanalysis.Manydif
