3、ldwide.Accordingtoarecentprojection,thenation’spopulationcouldreach435million,withalargepercentageofthoseresidentseconomicallydisadvantaged.Inaddition,climatechangewillbe“meaningfullyuncontrollable”inmanypartsoftheworld. Theeverydaytrendsseentoday,suchasdecliningperfo
4、rmanceofstudentsatalllevels,particularlyinmathandscience,anddecliningwagesandemploymentamongthelesseducated,w illonlycontinue,Crowmaintained,andare,tosaytheleast,notcontributingtofulfillingthedreamofclimbingthesocialladdermobility,qualityoflife,sustainableenvironmen
5、t,andlongerlifespansthatmostAmericansshare. “Howisitthatwecanhavethesegreatresearchuniversitiesandhavenegative-trendingoutcomes”Crowsaidinatalk“Iholdtheuniversitiesaccountable.…Wearepartoftheproblem.” Amongthe“thingsthatwedothatmakethethingsthatweteachlesslearnable,”
6、Crowsaid,arethestrictseparationofdisciplines,academicrigidity,andconservatism,thedesireofuniversitiestoimitateschoolsatthetopofthesocialranks,andthelackofthecomputersystemabilitythatwouldallowalargenumberofstudentstobeeducatedforasmallamountofmoney. Since2002,whenCrow
7、startedbeinginchargeatArizonaState—whichhecallsthe“newAmericanuniversity”—hehasledmorethanthreedozeninitiativesthataimtomaketheschool“i nclusive,scalable,fast,adaptive,challenge-focused,andwillingtotakerisks.” Amongthoseinitiativeswerearestructuringoftheengineering
