GeoffreyClifton,andhisnewwifeKatharine,joinedtheirparty.Geoffreyownedaplane,whichthepartyfoundespeciallyusefulinhelpingtomapthedesert.Theexplorers,Almasy,andtheCliftonsgotalongverywell.Onenight,afterhearingKatharinereadapassagefromhisbookofHerodotus,Almasyrealizedhewasinlovewithher.Theysoonbeganatorridandtumultuousaffair.Everywheretheystoleglancesandmoments,andtheywereobsessedwitheachother.Finally,in1938,Katharinebrokeofftheiraffair,tellingAlmasythatGeoffreywouldgomadifheeverfoundout.Althoughtheiraffairwasover,Almasyremainedhauntedbyher,andhetriedtopunishherforhurtinghimbybeingparticularlymeantoherinpublic.Atsomepoint,Geoffreysomehowfoundoutabouttheaffair.WorldWarIIbrokeoutin1939,andAlmasydecidedtocloseuptheircampandarrangedforGeoffreytopickhimupinthedesert.GeoffreyarrivedinhisplanewithKatharine.GeoffreyattemptedtokillallthreeofthembycrashingtheplaneintoAlmasy,whowasstandingontheground.TheplanemissedAlmasy,butthecrashkilledGeoffrey,leftKatharineseverelyinjured,andleftthemwithnowaytoescapethedesert.AlmasyplacedKatharineinanearbycave,coveringherwithaparachuteforwarmth,andpromisedtocomebackforher.Hewalkedacrossthedesertforfourdaysuntilhereachedthenearesttown,butwhenhegotthere,theEnglisharmywouldnothelphimgetbacktoKatharine.BecauseAlmasyhadaforeign-soundingname,theBritishweresuspiciousandlockedhimupasaspy,preventedhimfromsavingKatharine.Almasywaseventuallyreleased,butheknewitwastoolatetosaveher.HeworkedfortheGermans,helpingtheirspiesmake
