2、erstoyou–whatmatterstoourcountry–isnotwhathappensinthenextelection,butwhatwedotoliftupthenextgeneration. Andthefactis,therearefewissuesthatspeakmoredirectlytoourlongtermsuccessasanationthanissuesconcerningtheeducationweprovidetoourchildren.Ourprosperityinthe20thcentury

3、wasfueledbyaneducationsystemthathelpedgrowthemiddleclassandunleashthetalentsofourpeoplemorefullyandwidelythanatanytimeinourhistory. Webuiltschoolsandfocusedontheteachingofmathandscience. WehelpedagenerationofveteransgotocollegethroughtheGIBill. Weledtheglobeinproducing

4、collegegraduates,andinturnweledinproducingground-breakingtechnologiesandscientificdiscoveriesthatliftedlivingstandardsandsetusapartastheworld’sengineofinnovation. Ofcourse,othernationsrecognizethis,andarelookingtogainanedgeintheglobalmarketplacebyinvestinginbetterschoo

5、ls,supportingteachers,andcommittingtoclearstandardsthatwillproducegraduateswithmoreskills. Ourcompetitorsunderstandthatthenationthatout-educatesustodaywillout-competeustomorrow. Yet,toooftenwehavefailedtomakeinroadsinreformingandstrengtheningourpubliceducationsystem–th

6、edebatemiredinwornargumentshurledacrossentrencheddivides. Asaresult,overthelastfewdecades,we’velostground. OneassessmentshowsAmericanfifteenyearoldsnolongerevennearthetopinmathandsciencewhencomparedtotheirpeersaroundtheworld. AsreferencedinthenewsreportImentioned,we’ve

7、nowfallenbehindmostwealthycountriesinourhighschoolgraduationrates. Andwhileweonceledtheworldintheproportionofcollegegraduatesweproduced,todaywenolongerdo.Notonlydoesthatriskourleadershipasanation,itconsignsmillionsofAmericanstoalesserfuture. Forweknowthatthelevelofeduc
