3、ttogeneralmuster.Charlemagne'sattempttoraisehorsemenbyorderingthelesswealthytopooltheirresourceswaseventuallyunsuccessfulbecauseofthedifficultiesinadministeringsuchaprogram.Theeventualresultwasthedistributionoflandtovassalsonconditionofknight'sservice;

6、erhapslesspronouncedbecauseitwaspossibletoadministereffectivelyaprogramsuchasCharlemagnefoundimpossibletoimplement.Theverysuccessofthenewmilitaryinstitution,however,ledtothedisappearanceofthetribesmenasthemilitaryelite.Thustheinventionofthestirrupandit
7、sultimateeffectonwarfareandsocietyinChinaisatopicwellworthexamining.Itiscuriousthatsomethingasusefulasthestirrupshouldhaveappearedsomanycenturiesaftermanbeganridingthehorse.A.D.H.Bivar,inhisadmirablearticleonthestirrup,pointstothedangerinvolvedinmounti
8、ngahorsewhilecarryingweapons,citingtheexampleofCambyses,kingofPersiain522B.c.,whostabbedhimselffatallywhileleapingontohishorse.2Yettheearliestformsofstirrup,foundinthesculpturesofSanchiandelsewhereinIndia,areonlyofthelatesecondcenturyB.
