2、icChighereducationinstitutioninthecountry.By2012,onlinecourseenrollmentinthestatescommunitycollegestotaledalmostonemillion,representingabout11percentoftotalenrollment.Indeed,practicallyalloftheenrollmentincreasesoverthepasttenyearshaveoccurredinonlinecourses.Amon

3、gstudentstakingcreditcoursesin201112,oneofeveryvetookatleastoneonlinecourse.Thesetrendsraisecriticalquestionsabouttheeectofonlinelearningonstudentout-comes.Inthisstudy,weconsiderbothshort-andlong-termoutcomes,focusingonpartici-pation,coursecompletionandpassing,

4、degreeattainment,andtransfertofour-yearinstitu-tions.Astheenrollmenttrendssuggest,wendthatonlinelearninghasprovidednewaccesstohighereducation,withonlineparticipationincreasingforeachofthestateslargestethnicgroups.Still,participationisunevenacrossgroups,withAfric

5、anAmericansparticipatingatrelativelyhighratesandLatinoslaggingallgroups.Whenweexaminestudentoutcomes,wendasurprisingresult:short-termoutcomesarepoor,butlong-termoutcomesarenot.Howdoesthisbreakdown?Intheshortterm,coursebycourse,studentoutcomesareworseinonlinecour
