3、efamily—mother,father,children,evengrandparents—livinginasmallhouseandworkingtogethertosupporteachother.Everyoneunderstoodthelife-and-deathimportanceoffamilycooperationandhardwork.AlthoughmostpeopleintheUnitedStatesnolongerliveonfarms,theidealofhomeownershipisjustasstrong
4、inthetwentiethcenturyasitwasinthenineteenth.WhenU.S.soldierscamehomeafterWorldWarII,forexample,theydreamedofbuyinghousesandstartingfamilies.Sotherewasatremendousboominhomebuilding.Thenewhouses,typicallyinthesuburbs,wereoftensmallandnearlyidentical,buttheysatisfiedadeepnee
5、d.Manysawthesingle-familyhouseasthebasisoftheirwayoflife.Forthenewsuburbanitesofthe1950sand1960s,however,lifeinsidetheirsmallhouseswasverydifferentfromlifeonafarm.First,thefamilyspentmuchlesstimetogetherinthehouse.Thefatherfrequentlydrove,orcommuted,asmuchasanhourtoworkea
6、chmorning.Thechildrenwentto9schoolalldayandplayedafterschoolwithneighborhoodchildren.Thesuburbitselfwassometimescalledabedroomcommunitybecausepeopleusedtheirhousesbasicallyforsleeping.Second,thesuburbwasnotastablecommunity:Familiesmovedfrequentlyasthefatherssoughtupwardmo
7、bility—better-payingjobsandbiggerhouses.Althoughtheideaofhomewasstillaspreciousasalways,ithadtakenonadifferentmeaning.Inthe1970sand1980s,asmorewomenenteredthelaborforce,thefamilyspentevenlesstimetogether.Butthepictureischanging:Peoplecannowtelecommute,orworkathome,whilebe
