3、halfofabookinprogressoninformationandergodictheory.Theintentwasandistoprovideareasonablyself-containedadvancedtreatmentofmeasuretheory,probabilitytheory,andthetheoryofdiscretetimerandomprocesseswithanemphasisongeneralalphabetsandonergodicandstationarypropertiesofrandom
4、processesthatmightbeneitherergodicnorstationary.Theintendedaudiencewasmathematicallyinclinedengineeringgraduatestudentsandvisitingscholarswhohadnothadformalcoursesinmeasuretheoreticprobability.Muchofthematerialisfamiliarstu®formathematicians,butmanyofthetopicsandresult
5、shavenotpreviouslyappearedinbooks.Theoriginalprojectgrewtoolargeandthe¯rstpartcontainedmuchthatwouldlikelyboremathematiciansanddiscouragethemfromthesecondpart.HenceI¯nallyfollowedasuggestiontoseparatethematerialandsplittheprojectintwo.Theoriginaljusti¯cationfortheprese
6、ntmanuscriptwasthepragmaticonethatitwouldbeashametowasteallthee®ortthusfarexpended.Amoreidealisticmotivationwasthatthepresentationhadmeritas¯llingaunique,albeitsmall,holeintheliterature.Personalexperienceindicatesthattheintendedaudiencerarelyhasthetimetotakeacompleteco
