3、abookinprogressoninformationandergodictheory.Theintentwasandistoprovideareasonablyself-containedadvancedtreatmentofmeasuretheory,probabilitytheory,andthetheoryofdiscretetimerandomprocesseswithanemphasisongeneralalphabetsandonergodicandstationarypropertiesofrandomprocesses

4、thatmightbeneitherergodicnorstationary.Theintendedaudiencewasmathematicallyinclinedengineeringgraduatestudentsandvisitingscholarswhohadnothadformalcoursesinmeasuretheoreticprobability.Muchofthematerialisfamiliarstu®formathematicians,butmanyofthetopicsandresultshavenotprev

5、iouslyappearedinbooks.Theoriginalprojectgrewtoolargeandthe¯rstpartcontainedmuchthatwouldlikelyboremathematiciansanddiscouragethemfromthesecondpart.HenceI¯nallyfollowedasuggestiontoseparatethematerialandsplittheprojectintwo.Theoriginaljusti¯cationforthepresentmanuscriptwas

6、thepragmaticonethatitwouldbeashametowasteallthee®ortthusfarexpended.Amoreidealisticmotivationwasthatthepresentationhadmeritas¯llingaunique,albeitsmall,holeintheliterature.Personalexperienceindicatesthattheintendedaudiencerarelyhasthetimetotakeacompletecourseinmeasureandpr
