2、emsisagenerallywell-foundedfield,controlforLagrangiansystemshaslessofahistory.Inconsequence,thecontroltheorywediscusshereisquiteelementary,anddoesnotreallytouchuponsomeofthereallychallengingaspectsofthesubject.However,itishopedthatitwillservetogiveaflavourofthesubjectsothatpeoplecanseeiftheareaisone
3、whichthey’dliketopursue.OurpresentationbeginsinChapter1withaverygeneralaxiomatictreatmentofbasicNewtonianmechanics.Inthischapterwewillarriveatsomeconclusionsyoumayalreadyknowaboutfromyourpreviousexperience,butwewillalsoverylikelytouchuponsomethingswhichyouhadnotpreviouslydealtwith,andcertainlythep
4、resentationismoregeneralandabstractthaninafirst-timedynamicscourse.Whilenoneofthematerialinthischapteristechnicallyhard,theabstractionmaybeoff-puttingtosome.Thehope,however,isthatattheendoftheday,thegeneralitywillbringintofocusanddemystifysomebasicfactsaboutthedynamicsofparticlesandrigidbodies.Asfar
5、asweknow,thisisthefirstthoroughlyGalileantreatmentofrigidbodydynamics,althoughGalileanparticlemechanicsiswell-understood.LagrangianmechanicsisintroducedinChapter2.WheninstigatingatreatmentofLagrangianmechanicsatanotquiteintroductorylevel,onehasadifficultchoicetomake;doesoneusedifferentiablemanifoldsor
6、not?Thechoicemadehererunsdownthemiddleoftheusual,“No,itisfartoomuchmachinery,”and,“Yes,theunityofthedifferentialgeometricapproachisexquisite.”Thebasicconceptsassociatedwithdifferentialgeometryareintroducedinaratherpragmaticmanner.Theapproachwouldnotbeonerecommendedinacourseonthesubject,buthereserves
