2、hismasterofengineeringfinalprojectistoinvestigateandanalyzetheaccuracyofFiniteElementAnalysis(FEA)whenitisusedtocomparefullyelasticandelastic-plasticdeformationinHighStrengthSteel(HSS).HSS,likemanymetals,displaysalinearrelationshipbetweenstressandstrainuntilayieldpointisreached[1].Atth

3、eyieldpoint,ifforceisstillapplied,thematerialwillplasticallydeformandwillnotregeneratetoitsoriginalshape[2].Intheplasticrange,therelationshipbetweenstressoverstrainisnolongerlinear[2];asaresult,asmoreforceisappliedtothematerial,thevariableofstrainincreasesinlargerincrementswithrespectt

4、ostressuntilthematerialfractures[2].Elasticand/orplasticmaterialpropertiescanbeusedwhenperformingFEA.Plasticityisprimarilyanalyzedinplasticsandcertaincompositesbecauseoftheirlowmodulusofelasticity[3]orforgings.InHSS,FEAanalysiscanbeperformedusingfullyelasticmaterialproperties,howeverth

5、ismaynotbethebestanalysistoperform.WhenusingHSStodesignacomponent,oncethematerialgoesbeyonditsyieldpoint,permanentdeformationwilloccurwhich,forastructuraldesigntypicallyresultsinfailureofthecomponent.TocaptureplasticdeformationinFEA,tabular/experimentaldataofyieldstressandstraininthepl

6、asticrangeisrequiredtoensurethematerialcanbedeformedpasttheyieldpointandpermanentdeformationcanbeaccuratelyanalyzed.ThetabulardataisfromDataPointLabs,IthacaNY.Thisstudywillperformacomparisonstudytodeterminetheaccuracyoffullyelasticversuselastic-plasticanalysisinFEAofHSSintensionandcomp
