2、alengineering.Thefiniteelementmethodissuchawidelyusedanalysis-and-designtechniquethatitisessentialthatundergraduateengineeringstudentshaveabasicknowledgeofthetheoryandapplicationsofthetechnique.Towardthatobjective,Idevelopedandtaughtanundergraduate“specialtopics”courseonthefiniteelementmethoda
3、tWashingtonStateUniversityinthesum-merof1992.Thecoursewascomposedofapproximatelytwo-thirdstheoryandone-thirduseofcommercialsoftwareinsolvingfiniteelementproblems.Sincethattime,thecoursehasbecomearegularlyofferedtechnicalelectiveinthemechanicalengineeringprogramandisgenerallyinhighdemand.Durin
4、gthedevelopmentalprocessforthecourse,Iwasneversatisfiedwithanytextthatwasused,andwetriedmany.Ifoundtheavailabletextstobeatoneextremeortheother;namely,essentiallynotheoryandallsoftwareapplication,oralltheoryandnosoftwareapplication.Theformerapproach,inmyopinion,representstraininginusingcompute
5、rprograms,whilethelatterrepresentsgraduate-levelstudy.Ihavewrittenthistexttoseekamiddleground.Pedagogically,Ibelievethattrainingundergraduateengineeringstudentstouseaparticularsoftwarepackagewithoutprovidingknowledgeoftheunderlyingtheoryisadisservicetothestudentandcanbedangerousfortheirfutur
6、eemploy-ers.WhileIamacutelyawarethatmostengineeringprogramshaveaspecificfiniteelementsoftwarepackageavailableforstudentuse,Idonotbelievethatthetextthestudentsuseshouldbetiedonlytothatsoftware.Therefore,Ihavewrit-tenthistexttobesoftware-independent.Iemphasizethebasictheoryofthefiniteelementmetho
