3、sisatopicofcurrentresearch.Thepaperoutlinesare-engineeringapproachbasedontheformalizationofPLCprograms.ThetransformationintoavendorindependentformatandthevisualizationofthestructureofPLCprogramsisidentifiedasanimportantintermediatestepinthisprocess.ItisshownhowXMLandcorrespondingtechnologiescanbeuse

4、dfortheformalizationandvisualizationofanexistingPLCprogram.I.INTRODUCTIONProgrammableLogicControllers(PLCs)areaspecialtypeofcomputersthatareusedinindustrialandsafetycriticalapplications.ThepurposeofaPLCistocontrolaparticularprocess,oracollectionofprocesses,byproducingelectricalcontrolsignalsinrespon

5、setoelectricalprocess-relatedinputssignals.ThesystemscontrolledbyPLCsvarytremendously,withapplicationsinmanufacturing,chemicalprocesscontrol,machining,transportation,powerdistribution,andmanyotherfields.Automationapplicationscanrangeincomplexityfromasimplepaneltooperatethelightsandmotorizedwindowsha

6、desinaconferenceroomtocompletelyautomatedmanufacturinglines.Withthewideningoftheirapplicationhorizon，PLCprogramsarebeingsubjecttoincreasedcomplexityandhighqualitydemandsespeciallyforsafety-criticalapplications.Thegrowingcomplexityoftheapplicationswithinthecomplianceoflimiteddevelopmenttimeaswellasth
