5、nshipbetweenlanguageandsociety.Languagechangeswithchangesofsociety,inconverse,alsocastseffectsonsocialchanges.Since1949,Chinesesocietyhasexperiencedseveralmajorsocialchanges.Whetherthesesocialchangeswillaffectlanguageuseornothasbeenoneofthemajorconcernsoflinguisticfi

6、eld.ThispaperchoosestheNewYear’sEditorialsofthePeople’sDailyasstudyobjectforthepurposetoexploretherelationsbetweendiscourseandsocialchange.Takingsystemicfunctionallinguisticstheoryastheoreticalbasisandthecombinationofqualitativeandquantitativeanalysisasresearchmethod

7、,thisstudyinvestigatesthediachronicchangesoftheNewYear’sEditorialsover65years(1949-2013).Thisinvestigationmainlyprecedesthroughthreeaspects,namely,analysisofthehighfrequencykeywords,title,andgenericstructure.TheanalysisrevealsthattheNewYear’sEditorial,asatypeofdiscou

8、rse,displaysevidentdiachronicchangeswhichhaveacloserelationshipwiththechangesofsocialandculturalcontext,showingcovariantcharacteris
