5、sinthePowerTransmissionField2PREFACEInrecentyearstherehasbeenasignificantincreaseintheavailabilityandqualityofdata.Thishasbeentrueinanumberofareasandhasbeenparticularlyprevalentinthepowertransmissionfield.Fortunatelyadvancesintechniquestoextractrelevantinformationandtrendshavemir

6、roredthisincreaseindata.Inparticularutilisationofdatamininghasprovedsuccessfulinhelpingorganisationsleverageofftheselargevolumesofdata.AsurveywascarriedoutwithinCIGRESCD1in2003byTFD1.11.04ofWGD1.11toidentifyapplicationswheredataminingtechniqueshadbeensuccessfullyapplied.Fromthese

7、resultsandfromenquiriesinotherareasofpowertransmissionitbecomeapparenttherewasconfusionrelatingtotheterm“datamining”.Thetermmeantdifferentthingstodifferentpeopleandclearlydemonstratedtheneedforclarificationinthisarea.Therewasalsoageneralunderutilizationofthetechniquesavailable.Th
