4、ence&BehaviourABSTRACTOurattentionalsystemhastheremarkableabilitytoallowfamiliarcontextstoguideattentionalorienting,whilestillretainingtheabilitytoorientrapidlytonoveltyinourenvironment.Manycognitiveparadigmshavebeenusedtoinvestigatetheparticularprocessthatisresponsiblefororientingattentionton
5、ovelevents,buteachparadigmhasproducedauniquesetofboundaryconditions.OnesuchparadigmhasstudiedaneffectlabelledInhibitionofReturn(IOR),whichhasbeenarguedtotapintoanattentionalmechanismthatrapidlyorientsattentiontonovelty,butonlyinthespatialdomain.TheIOReffectwasinitiallytakenasevidenceofafundame
6、ntaldifferencebetweenspatialattentionalorientingandnon-spatialattentionalorienting.However,therewereasmallnumberofearlystudiesthatquestionedtheviewthattheIOReffectcanonlybeobservedinthespatialdomain.Inthisdissertation,Ibuiltupontheevidencefornon-spatialIORbyuncoveringtheeffectusingaTarget-Targ
7、et(TT)procedure.Althoughanumberofpriorstudieshadfailedtoobservenon-spatialIORusingaTTprocedure,Iwasabletouncovernon-spatialIOReffectsusingaTTprocedurebyintroducinganinterveningevent.TheIOR-likeeffectthatwasuncoveredusingthisprocedurewas
