3、ofahybridsystemPROTECTOR,whoseknowledgebaserepresentsaformalizationoftheexpertknowledgeintheminesafetyfield.Themaingoalofthesystemistheestimationofminingenvironmentasoneofthesignificantcomponentsofgeneralsafetystateinamine.Thisglobalgoalissubdividedin

4、toahierarchicalstructureofsubgoalswhereeachsubgoalcanbeviewedastheestimationofasetofparameters(gas,dust,climate,noise,vibration,illumination,geotechnicalhazard)whichdeterminethegeneralminesafetystateandcategoryofhazardinminingenvironment.Boththehybrid

5、natureofthesystemandthepossibilitiesitoffersareillustratedthroughacasestudyusingfielddatarelatedtoanexistingSerbiansurfacecoalmine.1.IntroductionOneofthemostimportantandalsomostcomplexproblemsencounteredinsurfacecoalminesissafetyanalysis.Anappro-priat

6、eandreliablesolutionforthisproblemisvitalfortheworkingprocessinmineswithsurfaceexploitation.Publishedstudiesonminesafetyanalysisareusuallybasedonresearchrelatedtoaccidentsstatistics(KecojevicandRadomsky,2004;Karra,2005;BennettandPassmore,1986;Marovell

7、i,1981).Severalstudieshavebeenconductedonhazardidentificationandriskassessment(SouthAfricanMiningIndustry,2003;JoyandGriffiths,2005)whichaimstoprovideadviceonhazardidentificationandriskassessmentwithintheminingindustry.Systemssafetyanalysismethodsprov
