4、anicaldevicessuchascalipers,micrometers,andthelike.However,theuseofsuchdevicesdoesnotreadilylenditselftoautomationtechniques.Itisknownthatthedistancebetweentwopointscanbedeterminedbymeasuringthepropagationtimeofawavetravellingbetweenthosetwopoints.Onesuchtypeofwaveisan

5、ultrasonic,oracoustic,wave.Whenanultrasonicwavetravelsbetweentwopoints,thedistancebetweenthetwopointscanbemeasuredbymultiplyingthetransittimeofthewavebythewavevelocityinthemediumseparatingthetwopoints.Itisthereforeanobjectofthepresentinventiontoprovideapparatusutilizin
