3、ionandnatureofseepagepointshavebeenbothcostlyandtimeconsuming.Ofcourse,whendamfailureisimminent,thereismuchmorethanmoneyandtimeatstake;theefficiencyandspeedwithwhichengineerscanlocatethesourceofseepagemaymakethedifferencebetweenatimelyfixandcatastrophe.RiverRese

4、rvoirdamisanarchedearthenstructureontheheadwatersoftheLittleColoradoRiver.Itislocatedabout24kmsouthwestofEagar,Arizona,US,andisownedandoperatedbyRoundValleyWaterUsersAssociation(RVWUA).Basedonverylimitedengineering,thedamwasconstructedbysettlersin1896oflocalmate

5、rialsandwithoutaclaycore.Duetorecurringsloughingproblems,thedamreceivedsignificantmodificationsonatleastfourseparateoccasions.Theembankmentconsistsofclayeysoilswithinarockfillshell,measuring335mlongwithamaximumheightofapproximately21.3mandisfoundeduponbasaltbedr

6、ock.In1996additionalriprapwasinstalledtoreducetheoriginalslopeoftheupstreamanddownstreamfaces.Areviewoftheearlyinspectionreportsrevealedthattheleftabutmentdrainwasconstructedusingtabularrockstocreateabox-shapedopeningovertherockfoundation.However,thecontactsbetw

7、eentheserockswereneithersealednorgrouted.Therehasbeenmuchspeculationregardingtheoriginalpurposeofthisdrain.Mostinvestigatorsbelievethatitwasconstructedtocarryawaywaterthatemergesfromaperennialspringrumoredtoexistwithintheleftabutment;itmayalsohavebeenintendedtof
