3、duCourseDescriptionThisthreehourcourseexaminestheroleofculture(s)inthecommunicationprocess.Cultureisdefinedbroadlyandincludesthe“bigthree”ofcontemporarydiversitystudies:gender,race(cf.ethnicity/nationality),andclass.Otherareasofdiversitystudiesaddressedinthisclassincludesexualorient
4、ation,ageandgenerationalcohorts,religion,andphysicalability.These“cultures”areassumedtohaveanimpactonnotonlyhowwecommunicate,butalsoonhowweconstructouridentities,relationships,socialinstitutions,andculturalartifacts.Whilethefocusofthiscourseisprimarilyon“domesticdiversity”(e.g.,thes
5、tudyofculturaldiversitywithintheUnitedStates),thiscoursewilladdressselectedglobalizationissuesastheyrelatetoU.S.diversity.GeneralEducationRequirementsUndersomecatalogues,thiscourseiseligibletobeusedforthreehoursofthesocialsciencerequirement..CourseObjectives1.Studentswilldemonstrate
6、acriticalunderstandingoftheroleofsocialinstitutions(e.g.,science,religion,lawandpublicpolicy;languageandmedia;etc.)inconstructingdiversitycategoriesovertime.2.Studentswilldemonstrateacriticalunderstandingofselected“livedexperiences”thatreflectmajorconcernsofpeoplewithineachmajordive
