2、relyaffectingearningpotentialandsubsequentlylifestyleandleisureactivities.Thispolicyisintendedtoreducetheriskofmanualhandlinginjuriesandprovideguidanceonthemeasuresthatthatshouldbetakentoensuresafeliftingandcarryingintheworkplace.SummaryofDutiesUnderSection2oftheHealthandSaf

3、etyatWorketc.Act1974,everyemployerhasthedutytoprovideasafeplaceofwork,asafeenvironmentandsafesystemsofwork,sofarasisreasonablypracticable.Thisdutyincludestheneedtominimiseriskarisingfrommanualhandlingtasks.UndertheManualHandlingOperationsRegulations1992(MOHR),manualhandlingi

4、sinterpretedasthetransportingorsupportingofanyload.Regulation4ofMHORrequirestheemployertoavoidtheneedforhazardousmanualhandlingactivities,sofarasisreasontopracticable.Whereitisnotpossibletoeliminatehazardousmanualhandling,anassessmentmustbeundertakentodeterminethelevelofrisk

5、.Suitablecontrolsmustthenbeintroducedtoreducetheriskofinjurytothelowestextentreasonablypracticable.Thismaybeachievedbytheuseofautomation,mechanicalaidsorredesigningthesystemofworkoreventheworkplaceitself.Anassessmentshouldtakeintoconsiderationthetasks,theload,theindividual,t

6、heenvironmentandanyotherfactorswhichmayaffectitssafeliftingandcarrying(forexampletheuseofpersonalprotectiveequipment).Assessmentsshouldbereviewedwhenthereisasignificantchangein:(a)theactivityorprocess(b)theworkingenvironment(c)thenumbersorabilitiesofpersonnel(d)thenatureofth

7、eload(s)tobehandled.Reassessmentmayalsoberequiredwhereaccident/absencestatisticsshowthattheoriginalcontrolmeasureswerenotsufficientlyeffective.Whereappropriatetheemployerisalsounderadutytoprovideemployeeswithinformationontheweightoftheloadandthecentreofgravity,wherethisisnot

8、positionedcentrally.Thereisnomaximumweightthatapersoncanberequiredtohandle.
