2、-stayedChaoPhrayaRiverBridge,willnotonlyalleviateBangkok'snotoriouslyheavytrafficbutalsocontributeanewarchitecturalsymboltothecapitalcity.ByRuchuHsu,RE.Thebridgewillcarryfourlanesoftrafficineachdirection.Theupperportionofeachtowerwillhaveanenclosedchamberforcablea
3、nchors,a1.5msquareopeningatthebottomprovidingeasyaccessformaintenanceandinspection.Forthepast20years,Thailand'scapital,Bangkok,hasbeenconstructingexpresswaystolleviatetrafficcongestion.AmongthemajorexpresswayprojectsinthecapitalistheOuterBangkokRingRoad,a170kmlong
4、highwayencirclingthecity.Theroadisnearlycomplete;onlytheeasternhalfofthesouthernleg--theSouthernOuterBangkokRingRoad,orS-OBRR--remainstobeconstructed.Scheduledforcompletionin2007,the21kmelevatedviaductwillincorporatefourmajorinterchangesandacable-stayedbridgeovert
5、heChaoPhrayaRiver.Withamainspanof500mandtwosidespansof220.5m,theChaoPhrayaRiverBridgewillbethelongestinThailand.In1996theDepartmentofHighwaysretainedajointventureteamofconsultantstodesigntheS-OBRR.ThedesignteamincludedAsianEngineeringConsultants(AEC),ThaiEngineeri
6、ngConsultants(TEC),andSiamGeneralEngineeringConsultants,allofBangkok;OrientalConsultants,ofTokyo;andParsonsBrinckerhoff(PB),ofNewYorkCity.Oncethejointventurewasformed,designersbeganafeasibilitystudyoftheChaoPhrayaRivercrossingandsetaboutdeterminingthemostsuitablet
7、ypeofcrossing.Tunnelsandcable-stayedbridgesweredevelopedandevaluated.Eventually,however,itbecameclearthatabridgewouldbemoreeconomical,wouldnotinterruptmarinetraffic,andwouldbestlenditselftothehighwayinterchange.In1999engineersbegantodesigntheS-OBRR.TheChaoPhrayaRi
