2、omicinformationfromUSDA.Itsmissionistoinformandenhancepublicandprivatedecision-makingoneconomicandpolicyissuesrelatedtoagriculture,food,naturalresources,andruraldevelopment.Toaccomplishthismission,ERSeconomistsandsocialscientistsdevelopanddisseminateeconomic,so
3、cialscientific,andstatisticalinformationtothepublic.Theprogramencompassesresearch;analysesoffoodandcommoditymarkets;policystudies;developmentofestimates,forecasts,andothereconomicandstatisticalindicators;anddevelopmentofdatasetscompiledfromdiversesources.OneofE
4、RSOnline’smostimportantservicesistoprovideexternalcustomerswithaccesstomorethan9,000datasets.InApril2003,theagencyinitiatedawebdatadeliveryimprovementprojecttoenhanceERSdataproductsandtheirdeliveryviatheweb,ensuringthatERSdataareeasytofind,access,anddownload,an
5、dthatdataproductsprovideastandardsetoffeaturesthatimprovetheirusefulnessandimpact.Underthisinitiative,ERShasdevelopedafacettedclassificationschemeforitsdataproducts,implementedasitearchiveforhistoricaldataproducts,launchedaredesignedmaindataentrypage(www.ers.us
6、da.gov/data),andbegunimplementationoftheCordaPopChartsandOptiMapdatavisualizationproducts.ERSisnowseekingusabilityconsultingsupporttoensurethatGISmappingproductsarepresentedandaccessiblebytheirintendedaudiences.Web-basedinteractivemappingsystemsarebecomingpower
7、fultoolsforERSuserstoaccessandvisualizecomplexinformation.ERScurrentlyhas20XXXinteractivedataproducts,including5Xthatincorporatesophisticatedgeospatialmappingfeatures.Althoughallonlinesystemscanpresentusabilitychallenges,theseproblemsareevenmorepronouncedinonli
8、nemappingandinteractivedatadisplaysystemsduetotheincreaseincomplexitythatoccurswhenspecializedfunctionalityisaddedtoaconventionalwebbrowserenvironment,andtheinherentcomplexi
