3、lyimprovedbyaddingleadandsulfurtoobtainso-calledfree-machiningsteels.ResulfurizedandRephosphorizedsteels.Sulfurinsteelsformsmanganesesulfideinclusions(second-phaseparticles),whichactasstressraisersintheprimaryshearzone.Asaresult,thechipsproducedbreakupeasilya
4、ndaresmall;thisimprovesmachinability.Thesize,shape,distribution,andconcentrationoftheseinclusionssignificantlyinfluencemachinability.Elementssuchastelluriumandselenium,whicharebothchemicallysimilartosulfur,actasinclusionmodifiersinresulfurizedsteels.Phosphoru
5、sinsteelshastwomajoreffects.Itstrengthenstheferrite,causingincreasedhardness.Hardersteelsresultinbetterchipformationandsurfacefinish.Notethatsoftsteelscanbedifficulttomachine,withbuilt-upedgeformationandpoorsurfacefinish.Thesecondeffectisthatincreasedhardness
6、causestheformationofshortchipsinsteadofcontinuousstringyones,therebyimprovingmachinability.LeadedSteels.Ahighpercentageofleadinsteelssolidifiesatthetipofmanganesesulfideinclusions.Innon-resulfurizedgradesofsteel,leadtakestheformofdispersedfineparticles.Leadis
7、insolubleiniron,copper,andaluminumandtheiralloys.Becauseofitslowshearstrength,therefore,leadactsasasolidlubricant(Section32.11)andissmearedoverthetool-chipinterfaceduringcutting.Thisbehaviorhasbeenverifiedbythepresenceofhighconcentrationsofleadonthetool-sidef
