1、CEOACTIVISMIN2017:HIGHNOONINTHEC-SUITEINTRODUCTIONInJune2016,WeberShandwickandKRCResearchreleasedresearchabouttheAmericanpublic’sawarenessofandattitudestowardCEOsspeakingoutonimportantsocietalissues.WeconductedthestudyatatimewhenweobservedariseinCEOstakingpub
2、licpositionsonsocietalissuesthatwerenotovertlytiedtotheirbottomlines.ManyoftheseearlyactiviststandswererelatedtolegislationenactedinvariousstatesthataffectedtheLGBTcommunity.Intheresearch,TheDawnofCEOActivism,wefoundthatasizeable,butminority,segmentofAmerican
3、sbelievethatCEOshaveadutytospeakuponcontentiousissues,favourCEOswhovoicetheiropinionsandarelikelytobuyproducts/servicesfromcompaniesthattakestands.1However,wealsolearnedthatpublicopinionworksbothways:ManyAmericansdisagreewithCEOstakingstandsonhot-buttonissues
4、andarelesslikelytobuyproducts/servicesfromcompanieswhoseCEOsdoso.WeconcludedthatCEOactivismcomeswithbothrisksandrewardsforCEOsandtheircompanies.OURSURVEYDESCRIBEDCEOACTIVISMASFOLLOWS:Inthepastyearorso,someCEOshavespokenoutpubliclyandtakenastandoncontroversial
5、issues.Forexample,CEOshavespokenupaboutsocial,politicalandenvironmentalissues,suchasclimatechange,incomefairness,same-sexmarriage,immigration,guncontrolanddiscrimination.Sinceconductingthatresearch,thebusinessclimatechangeddramaticallyandithasgrownharderforso
6、mecompaniestoleavepoliticstothepoliticians.ThetippingpointcameearlyinPresidentDonaldJ.Trump’snewadministration.OnJanuary27,2017,thepresidentissuedanexecutiveordertemporarilybanningtraveltotheU.S.fromsevenpredominantlyMuslimcountries.ManyCEOsspokeoutagainstthe
7、entryban,socialmedialitup,protestseruptedworldwideandmediaattentionexploded.Similarly,manycompaniesandCEOsspokeoutafterthepresidentannouncedthattheU.S.wouldwithdrawfromtheParisclimateaccord.Tocontinuetoprovidecounseltoclientsonhowbusinessesmightrespondtothepo
8、liciesofthenewadministration,WeberShandwickcollected153corporateresponsestotheexecutiveorderandfoundthat84%wereissueddirectlybyCEOsand73%voicedaclearopinionagainsttheban.CEOsdidnotstandon
