1、CEOACTIVISMIN2017:HIGHNOONINTHEC-SUITEINTRODUCTIONInJune2016,WeberShandwickandKRCResearchreleasedresearchabouttheAmericanpublic’sawarenessofandattitudestowardCEOsspeakingoutonimportantsocietalissues.WeconductedthestudyatatimewhenweobservedariseinCEOstakingpublicpositionsonsocietalis
2、suesthatwerenotovertlytiedtotheirbottomlines.ManyoftheseearlyactiviststandswererelatedtolegislationenactedinvariousstatesthataffectedtheLGBTcommunity.Intheresearch,TheDawnofCEOActivism,wefoundthatasizeable,butminority,segmentofAmericansbelievethatCEOshaveadutytospeakuponcontentiousi
3、ssues,favourCEOswhovoicetheiropinionsandarelikelytobuyproducts/servicesfromcompaniesthattakestands.1However,wealsolearnedthatpublicopinionworksbothways:ManyAmericansdisagreewithCEOstakingstandsonhot-buttonissuesandarelesslikelytobuyproducts/servicesfromcompanieswhoseCEOsdoso.Weconcl
4、udedthatCEOactivismcomeswithbothrisksandrewardsforCEOsandtheircompanies.OURSURVEYDESCRIBEDCEOACTIVISMASFOLLOWS:Inthepastyearorso,someCEOshavespokenoutpubliclyandtakenastandoncontroversialissues.Forexample,CEOshavespokenupaboutsocial,politicalandenvironmentalissues,suchasclimatechang
5、e,incomefairness,same-sexmarriage,immigration,guncontrolanddiscrimination.Sinceconductingthatresearch,thebusinessclimatechangeddramaticallyandithasgrownharderforsomecompaniestoleavepoliticstothepoliticians.ThetippingpointcameearlyinPresidentDonaldJ.Trump’snewadministration.OnJanuary
6、27,2017,thepresidentissuedanexecutiveordertemporarilybanningtraveltotheU.S.fromsevenpredominantlyMuslimcountries.ManyCEOsspokeoutagainsttheentryban,socialmedialitup,protestseruptedworldwideandmediaattentionexploded.Similarly,manycompaniesandCEOsspokeoutafterthepresidentannouncedthat
7、theU.S.wouldwithdrawfromtheParisclimateaccord.Tocontinuetoprovidecounseltoclientsonhowbusinessesmightrespondtothepoliciesofthenewadministration,WeberShandwickcollected153corporateresponsestotheexecutiveorderandfoundthat84%wereissueddirectlybyCEOsand73%voicedaclearopinionagainsttheba
