5、twasheldinGrenoble,France.SincethentheconferencevenuehasalternatedbetweentheUnitedKingdomandContinentalEurope,andtheeventwasrenamedtheEuropeanConferenceonInformationRetrieval.Inrecentyears,ECIRhascontinuedtogrowandhasbecomethemajorEuropeanforumforthediscussionofresearchinthefieldofInformatio
6、nRetrieval.Tomarkthismetamorphosisfromasmallinformalcol-loquiumtoamajoreventintheIRresearchcalendar,theBCS-IRSGdecidedtorenametheeventtotheEuropeanConferenceonInformationRetrieval.ECIR2004received88fullpapersubmissions,fromacrossEuropeandfurtherafieldincludingNorthAmerica,ChinaandAustralia,a
7、testamenttothegrowingpopularityandreputationoftheconference.Outofthe88submittedpapers,28wereacceptedforpresentation.Allpaperswerereviewedbyatleastthreereviewers.Amongtheacceptedpapers11haveastudentastheprimaryauthor,illustratingthatthetraditionalst
