2、tationinthepromotionofanaggressionreducingpossessionnorminanartificialsociety.Apreviousmodelofnormativereputationisextendedsuchthatagentsaregiventhecognitivecapacitytocategoriseotheragentsasmembersofagroup.Inthepreviousmodelreputationalinformationwascommunicatedbetweenagentsconcerningindividu
3、als.Inthemodelpresentedherereputationsareprojectedontowholegroupsofagents(aformof“stereotyping”).Bystereotyping,normfollowersoutperformcheaters(whodonotfollowthenorm)undercertainconditions.Stereotyping,byincreasingthedomainofapplicabilityofapieceofreputationalinformation,allowsagentstomakeinf
4、ormeddecisionsconcerninginteractionswithagentswhichnootheragenthaspreviouslymet.However,ifconditionsarenotconducive,stereotypingcancompletelynegatenormfollowingbehaviour.Groupreputationcanbeapowerfulmechanism,therefore,forthepromotionofbeneficentnormsundertherightconditions.1.IntroductionThec

6、anttonotethatnounifiedorgenerallyaccepteddefinitionofasocialnormexistsandthisisproductivelyevidencedbythedifferencesinthemodelspresented1andconclusionsdrawninpreviouscomputationalworkonnorms.However,ingeneral,muchoftheworkhastendedtofocusonprescriptivebeliefsconcerningproperbehaviourswithingi
