4、pockets,includingamongothersbalklineandstraightrail,cushioncaroms,three-cushionbilliardsandartisticbilliards;2)pocketbilliards(or"pool")generallyplayedonatablewithsixpockets,includingamongothers8-ball(theworld'smostwidelyplayedcuesport),nine-ball,straightpool,one-pocketandbankpool;and3
5、)snooker,whichwhiletechnicallyapocketbilliardsgame,isgenerallyclassifiedseparatelybasedonitshistoricdivergencefromothergames,aswellasaseparatecultureandterminologythatcharacterizeitsplay.Moreobscurely,therearegamesthatmakeuseofobstaclesandtargets,andtable-topgamesplayedwithdisksinstead
6、ofballs.ThefirstchampionshipintheUnitedStateswasheldin1859.Thegameplayedthen,called"oldstyleplay,"wasfour-ballcarombilliards. ThefirstgreatbilliardsplayerwasJacobSchaefer,Sr.,whowaschampionfromthe1870'sthroughtheearlyyearsofthe20thcentury.Hissuccessor,WillieHoppe,isgenerallyregardedas
