3、softenyears,planttrees;ifyouthinkintermsof100years,teachthepeople.InIndia,too,theancientsayingisvyayekratevardhateevanityam,vidhyadhanamsarvadhanpradhanamThewealththatincreasesbygiving,Thatwealthisknowledgeandissupremeofallpossessions.Thisisoneexampleofhowourtwonationsareun
4、itedintheirtimelesswisdom.Thereismuchmore,though,thatlinksourtwoancientcivilizations.IbeganmyjourneyinChinainXian.Indoingso,IretracedthefootstepsoftheChinesemonkXuanzang.HetravelledtoIndiafromXianintheseventhcenturyinsearchofknowledgeandreturnedtoXianasafriendandchroniclero
5、fIndia.PresidentXi'svisitinIndialastSeptemberstartedfromAhmedabad.ItisnotfarfromVadnagar,mybirthplace,butimportant,becauseithostedXuanzangandmanypilgrimsfromChina.Theworld'sfirstlargescaleeducationalexchangeprogrammetookplacebetweenIndiaandChinaduringtheTangDynasty.Recordst
6、alkofabout80IndianmonkscomingtoChinaandnearly150ChinesemonksreturningaftertheireducationinIndia.Andyes,thiswasinthe10thand11thcentury.Mumbai'sriseasaportandashipbuildingcentreisbecauseofcottontradewithChina.And,thosewholovesilkandtextilesknowthatIndia'sfamoustanchoisareesow
7、ethemselvestothreebrothersfrommystateofGujaratwholearnttheartofweavingfromChinesemastersinthe19thcentury.And,inanunquestionableevidenceofourancienttrade,silkinourclassicalSanskritlanguageiscalledCinapatta.So,thecenturies-oldstoryofourrelationshasbeenofspiritualism,learning,
8、artandtrade.Itisapictureofrespectforeachother'scivilisationandofsharedprosperity.I
