3、ears,planttrees;ifyouthinkintermsof100years,teachthepeople.InIndia,too,theancientsayingisvyayekratevardhateevanityam,vidhyadhanamsarvadhanpradhanamThewealththatincreasesbygiving,Thatwealthisknowledgeandissupremeofallpossessions.Thisisoneexampleofhowourtwonationsareunite
4、dintheirtimelesswisdom.Thereismuchmore,though,thatlinksourtwoancientcivilizations.IbeganmyjourneyinChinainXian.Indoingso,IretracedthefootstepsoftheChinesemonkXuanzang.HetravelledtoIndiafromXianintheseventhcenturyinsearchofknowledgeandreturnedtoXianasafriendandchronicler
5、ofIndia.PresidentXi’svisitinIndialastSeptemberstartedfromAhmedabad.ItisnotfarfromVadnagar,mybirthplace,butimportant,becauseithostedXuanzangandmanypilgrimsfromChina.Theworld’sfirstlargescaleeducationalexchangeprogrammetookplacebetweenIndiaandChinaduringtheTangDynasty.Rec
6、ordstalkofabout80IndianmonkscomingtoChinaandnearly150ChinesemonksreturningaftertheireducationinIndia.Andyes,thiswasinthe10thand11thcentury.Mumbai’sriseasaportandashipbuildingcentreisbecauseofcottontradewithChina.And,thosewholovesilkandtextilesknowthatIndia’sfamoustancho
7、isareesowethemselvestothreebrothersfrommystateofGujaratwholearnttheartofweavingfromChinesemastersinthe19thcentury.And,inanunquestionableevidenceofourancienttrade,silkinourclassicalSanskritlanguageiscalledCinapatta.So,thecenturies-oldstoryofourrelationshasbeenofspiritual
8、ism,learning,artandtrade.Itisapictureofrespectforeachother’scivilisationandofsharedprosperity.Itisreflectedint
