5、nalkali.Bothchlorine/causticsodaandsoda-ashproductionaredependentoncheapreadilyavailablesuppliesofrawmaterials.Chlorine/causticsodarequiresareadysupplyofcheapbrineandelectricity,soda-ashrequiresbrine,limestoneandlotsofenergy.Soda-ashplantsareonlyprofitableiftheir
6、rawmaterialsdonothavetobetransportedfar.Theavailabilityofsuchsuppliesisamajorfactorinthelocationofmanyofthechemicalindustry’sgreatcomplexes.Oneofthekeyrawmaterialsislime.Limestoneconsistsmostlyofcalciumcarbonate(CaCO3)laiddownovergeologicaltimebyvariousmarineorga
7、nisms.High-qualitylimestonesareoftengoodenoughtobeuseddirectlyascalciumcarbonateinfurtherreactions.LimestoneisusuallyminedinvastoLine-BasedProductspen-castquarries,manyofwhichwillalsocarryoutsomeprocessingofthematerials.Thetwokeyrawproductsderivedfromlimestoneare
