3、sthemechanismthatpreventsphysiologicdiplopia(diplopiaelicitedbyobjectsoutsidePanum'sarea)fromreachingconsciousness,SuppressionclassificationCentralversusperipheral.Centralsuppressionisthetermusedtodescribethemechanismthatkeepsthefovealimageofthedeviatingeyefromreachin

4、gconsciousness,therebypreventingconfusion,Peripheralsuppressionisthemechanismthateliminatesdiplopiabypreventingawarenessoftheimagethatfallsontheperipheralretinainthedeviatingeye,theimagethatresemblestheimagefallingonthefoveaofthefixatingeye.Thisformofsuppressionisclea

5、rlypathologic,developingasacorticaladaptationonlywithinanimmaturevisualsystem,Adultsmaybeunabletodevelopperipheralsuppressionandthereforemaybeunabletoeliminatetheperipheralsecondimageoftheobjectviewedbythefixatingeye(theobjectofregard)withoutclosingoroccludingthedevia

6、tingeye,SuppressionclassificationNonalternatingversusalternating.Ifsuppressionisunidirectionaloralwayscausestheimagefromthedominanteyetopredominateovertheimagefromthedeviatingeye,thesuppressionisnonalternating.Thistypeofmechanismmayleadtotheestablishmentofstrabismicam

7、blyopia.Iftheprocessisbidirectionalorswitchesovertimebetweentheimagesofthe2eyes,thesuppressionisdescribedasalternating.SuppressionclassificationFacultativeversusobligatory.SuppressionmaybeconsideredfacultativeifPresentonlywhentheeyesareinthedeviatedstateandabsentinall
