2、isaster,theevilconsequencesofwhichhaveaffectedalltheirdescendants.WhatwastheundetectedsnaretowhichAdamandEvefellprey?Itwasthemotive–unstated,butimplied–thepromiseofindependence.Onceyouknowgoodandevil,youwillbefreetomakeyourowndecisions.YouwillnolongerbedependentonGod.Thisself-
3、assertingdesireforindependencehasbeentransmittedbyinheritancetothewholehumanracethatisdescendedfromAdamandEve.Itisthedistinctivemarkofthe“oldAdam”–thefallensinfulnaturethatlurksineachofus.DifferentRoutestoIndependenceHistorically,therehavebeenvariousroutesthathumanityhasfollow
4、edinseekingindependencefromGod.Thefirstisknowledge.InthegardenofEdenthereweretwospecialtrees–thetreeoflifeandthetreeofknowledge.Itwasacriticalmomentinhistory,whenAdamandEventurnedawayfromthetreeoflifeandchosethetreeofknowledge.Eversince,theattainmentofknowledgehasbeenonemaingo
5、alofhumanity.Overthelasttwoorthreecenturiesthishasexpresseditselfinanever-increasingemphasisonscience.(OurEnglishword“science”isdirectlyderivedfromscientia,theLatinwordfor“knowledge.”)Thisexplosionofsciencehasnot,however,solvedhumanity’smostbasicproblems:injustice,cruelty,war,
6、poverty,disease.Infact,insomewaysithasincreasedthem.Sciencehasprovidedmanwithweaponsofmassdestructionthatcouldobliteratetheentirehumanraceandturnthewholeearthintoadesolatewaste.Furthermore,someoftheseweaponsareinthehandsofcruelandwickedmen,whowouldnotbedeterredfromusingthembya
7、nyconsiderationsofmercyormorality.AsecondroutewhichhumanityhasfollowedinseekingtoachieveindependenceofGodisatfirstsurprising.Itisreligion.Invariousdifferentformsmenhaveestablishedreligiousrulesandsystemsofworshipsocompleteandall-sufficientthatthereisnofurtherneedofGod.Alltheyh
