2、thinessoftheaircrafthasbecomeanimportantissueinrecentyearstomilitaryandcivilianaircraftoperators.TheUSAirForceinrecentyearshasshownconsiderableinterestintheuseofadvancedcompositestorepaircrackedmetallicaircraftstructurestoenhancetheirlife.Oneissuepreventingusingbondedc
3、ompositepatches,asastandardmeansofrepairingdamagedmetallicaircraftstructuresisthefactthattheintegrityoftherepairsisunknown.Inthispaperthedesign,analysisanddurabilityofadhesivelybondedcompositepatchrepairsofcrackedaircraftaluminumpanelsisreported.Pre-cracked2024-T3clada
4、luminumpanelsof381×89×1.6mm(15×3.5×0.063in.)repairedwithoctagonalsinglesidedboron/epoxycompositepatchwereusedastestspecimen.Twodifferentcompositeplyconfigurations,5-and6-plywereinvestigated.Linearandnon-linearfiniteelementanalyseswereperformedonthetestspecimenusing8-no
5、ded24degreeoffreedom(DOF)hexagonalelementsforthealuminumpanel,boron/epoxypatchandadhesivematerialsubjectedtouni-axialtensileloading.Thestressdistributionsobtainedwereusedtopredicttheincreaseinstrengthanddurabilityoftherepairedstructure.Acomparisonofthestressvaluesatcri
6、ticalpointswasmade.Theanalysisalsowasusedtovalidatevariousassumptionsmadeinthedesignofthecompositepatch.Experimentalinvestigationswereconductedonthecrackedaluminumpanelrepairedwitha5-plycompositepatchaswellasontwobaseline-unpatchedpanels(onewithacrackandonewithnocrack)
7、byuni-axialtensiletestingtovalidatetheanalyticalresults.TheexperimentwasconductedontheInstrontension-testingmachine.Itwasfoundthatthemaximumskinstressdecreasessignificantlyaftertheapplicationofthepatchandtheregionofmaximumskinstressshiftsfromthecrackfrontforanunpatched
