5、inese,inboththespokenandthewrittenlanguage,manytermsareusedtoreflectracial,cultural,ethnic,andnationalattributes(zhongguoren,zhonghuaminzu,huaren,huaqiao,tangren,honren,andsoon).Thesetermshaveevolvedthroughtime;somearerecentlyinvented;someoriginatedbeforetheChristianera,butarestillpopularamongChi
6、nese.Suchsingulartermsalone,however,cannotdescribethecomplexsituationsofChineseidentity.Themodernculturalconceptof"Chinese,"forexample,mustbeunderstoodinthecontextofChina'srecentpoliticalhistory.InordertocreateamodernidentitytocopewithconditionscreatedbyChina'sconfrontationwiththeWesternworld,the
7、Chinesewereobligedtodealwithforeignconcepts,includingthatofnation,state,sovereignty,citizenship,andrace;morerecently,withculturalandethnicidentity.Chineseofficialsandintellectualssincetheendofthenineteenthcenturyhaveha
