3、etthisphenomenon,whatattitudetheyadopttowardsit,andhowtheywillultimatelydecidetoact.Mentalmodelsareunderstoodasconstructedbythehumanmindasaresultofperception,experience,attitudesandknowledge,andthecomprehensionofdiscourse.Applyingtheconceptofmentalmodelsallo
4、wsanunderstandingoflandmanagerdecision-makingwithregardtosoilmanagement,linkingperceptions,attitudesandbeliefswithbehaviour.Weshowhowmentalmodelscanhelpidentifyconsistenciesanddifferencesofperceptionsofdifferentsoil-relatedstakeholders,suchasfarmers,scientis
5、ts,administrators,advisorsandpolicymakers.Inapracticaltestoftheconcept,adiagram-basedrepresentationofmentalmodelswasappliedinsouth-westernSpain.Wefoundthattheoccurrencesofoverlapinthementalmodelofsoil-relatedstakeholdersaretheareaswherecommunicationshouldfoc
