3、d`polycentricurbanregions'emphasizethatexternaleconomiesarenotconfinedtoasingleurbancore,butaresharedamongacollectionofnearbyandlinkedcities.However,empiricalanalysesofagglomerationandagglomerationexternal-itieshavesofarneglectedthemulticentricspatialo
4、rganizationofagglomerationandthepossibilityofthe`sharing'or`borrowing'ofsizebetweencities.Theauthorstakeupthisempiricalchallengebyanalyzinghowdifferentspatialstructures,inparticularthemonocentricity^polycentricitydimension,affecttheeconomicperformanceo
5、fUSmetropolitanareas.Ordinaryleastsquaresandtwo-stageleast-squaresmodelsexplaininglaborproductivityshowthatspatialstructurematters:polycentricityisassociatedwithhigherlaborproductivity.Thisappearstojustifysuggestionsthat,comparedwithmoremonocentricmetr
6、opolitanareas,agglomerationdiseconomiesremainrelativelylimitedinthemorepolycentricmetropolitanareas,whereasagglomerationexternalitiesaretosomeextentsharedamongthecitiesinsuchanarea.However,itwasalsofoundthatanetworkofgeographicallyproximatesmallercitie
